Scart Adaptor Querry?

I don't have enough scart connectors on the back of the TV, so I bough a scart adaptor, it has 4 scart connections and one end that connects to the TV, anyway I connected all up plugged in my DVD/Sat receiver and video recorder in. Problem being it will not work unless all are turned on, and when all are turned onyou can watch noithing as all is interfearing with each other. If I just turn on say the sat receiver nothing will show up, same if I turn on DVD player, everything has to be turned on.
