Workman's comp rights in Florida?

Someone I know fell while working out in the parking lot at his job. There was a huge hole that he tripped over in the ground. Now he is on light duty at work and they cut his pay to min wage. Is this legal? He has missed work to go to doctors appointments so his check was like 400 dollars short this past week. It was their fault they didn't patch up the ground. What if a customer fell? They would have sued. If he sues he would probably get fired. It just seems unfair that he is getting punished because of their negligence. What are his rights? He will have to have surgery most likely. Any lawyers out there or anyone with experience with workman's comp
